11 Oct Rudolf Elmer: Multinationals and rich individuals are cheating civil society
Rudolf Elmer, the Swiss whistleblower from Julius Bär (Cayman Islands), says the European Parliament must take immediate action on the Panama Papers, which have revealed a corruption of democracy. In his contribution to the GUE/NGL Panama Papers blog, he argues that multinationals and rich individuals are cheating civil society, with serious consequences for democracy and for governments’ ability to provide public services. Not enough action has been taken in response to the various previous leaks revealing tax evasion and avoidance, Elmer adds. He calls for sanctions to be imposed on tax havens and for the tax lawyers and accountants that facilitate crime and tax avoidance to be held personally liable for their actions.
